Event Details
The Greenscreen Intensive is designed to provide an in-depth introduction to greenscreen techniques and processes. From planning to shooting to compositing, this class will walk participants through hands-on, production-proven techniques that take average work to the next level. Understanding nodal compositing is a plus but not required. dvGarage's "Conduit" is bundled with the class. Attendees will need to bring a computer/laptop capable of compositing. OSX 10.5.1 or higher required; PCs running After Effects are also acceptable.

Subjects Covered:

Understanding how greenscreen keying works
Basic keying can be done by anyone, but truly understanding the process allows seasoned artists to handle challenges that invariably come up during production. We'll show you why we use green, how various keyers work, and how to get the most out of them.

How to make keying hard (and what makes it easy)
Sometimes the easiest way to do great work is to learn what not to do. We'll show what elements make keying more difficult and how to mitigate the issues that present themselves from shoot to shoot.

The basic greenscreen setup
If you're planning to shoot greenscreen, you will need somewhere to shoot it. We'll cover the basic setup at nearly all price ranges. Understanding what is minimally necessary and where to cut corners (and where not) is key to doing good greenscreen work.

Proper lighting and exposure
One of the most important elements of good greenscreen production is both the lighting of the foreground and the background. We'll show you the key components and let participants try it themselves.

Using scopes to get the most our of your greenscreen
Getting good keys is very much a math operation. But don't worry! It's simple math! We'll show how to look at measurement tools from a compositor's point of view.

Capturing footage for maximum quality
You can have great lighting and a great background, but if you are simply capturing DV, HDV, or even DVCProHD, you are at a disadvantage. We'll show you how to get great footage...even out of inexpensive cameras.

Getting proper set data
If you need to match your greenscreen to that of a computer graphics set, collection data on the set makes the process much much easier. We'll show you what you need to gather and how to use it.

Keying basics
We'll walk you through the process of greenscreen keying and show you what you're looking for and what you're trying to avoid.

Advanced keying techniques
Not all video files you get will be "optimum," so what now? How do you pull good keys from bad footage? We'll walk you through some challenging plates and show you some techniques to help get the most of what's left.

Finishing your composite
Keying is more than just removing the background, it's carefully blending the foreground and background. We'll dive into some more advanced techniques that deliver beleivable composites.
